Did you know that Maiden Lane, once known as St. Mark’s Place and later as Morton Street, was once San Francisco’s tiniest red-light district, and an epicenter of crime, saloons, and gambling dens?
In 1948, iconic architect Frank Lloyd Wright designed this building at 140 Maiden Lane: the only Frank Lloyd Wright building in San Francisco. What was originally the V.C. Morris Gift Shop and what is now Italian tailoring brand Isaia Napoli, 140 Maiden Lane served as the prototype for the spiral ramp at the Guggenheim Museum in New York.
By 1958, Maiden Lane was praised as “one of the finest shopping streets in America”. Today, it is home to global brands including Gucci, Tory Burch, Chanel, and Maison Margiela, as well as small businesses that are no less important to our Union Square family, including Once Upon Dosa, Salon Nine, Lotus Nail Salon, Blake Charles Salon, and much more.
